Drones War
A free, single-player, turn-based hex wargame that runs in the browser: scout with drones, hold ground with infantry, take the enemy HQ.

The idea
Modern warfare changed with cheap drones: reconnaissance, strikes and electronic warfare now shape every move on the ground. Drones War turns that into a compact strategy game you can play in a 20–40 minute session, with no install and no account.
What we built
- A hex-map wargame with fog of war, drone reconnaissance and strikes, infantry, supply lines tied to headquarters, roads, research and electronic warfare.
- Weather that changes what drones can do, with visual effects to match.
- An AI opponent with Easy, Normal and Hard levels that plays by the same rules as the player.
- Five maps based on real battlefields: the Ardennes, Arnhem, Monte Cassino, the Narva front and the Normandy coast.
- Saved games in the browser, so a match can be continued later.
Engineering highlights
A deterministic simulation core
All game rules live in a pure TypeScript core with a seeded random number generator, separate from rendering and UI. The same inputs always produce the same game. That makes the rules testable, bugs reproducible, and the AI opponent easy to reason about.
WebGL rendering in React
The map is rendered with PixiJS on WebGL, the interface with React. Game state lives in a small store shared by both.
No backend at all
The game is served as static files from the edge. There is nothing to scale, patch or pay for when the player count grows.
Decisions written down
Key architectural choices are recorded as architecture decision records, so the reasoning survives as long as the code.
Testing
The simulation core is covered by unit tests plus an integration test that plays through game flows. GitHub Actions runs type-checking and the full test suite on every push and pull request.
